Biodiversity.
Biodiversity loss is one of the world's many on growing problems. To understand why its loss is important, you must first know what biodiversity is.
Biodiversity describes the variety of all living life-forms including plants, animals and micro-organisms, the genes they all contain and the ecosystems of which they form a part. Found on Earth, biodiversity today consists of many millions of distinct biological species; the product of four billion years of evolution. Approximately 9 million types of plants, animals, protists and fungi inhabit the Earth. So do 7 billion people.
There are three levels of biodiversity which are commonly discussed: genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity.
1. Genetic diversity is all the different genes contained in all the living species. This including individual plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms.
2. Species diversity is all the different species. It also factors the differences within and between different species.
3. Ecosystem diversity is all the different habitats, biological communities and ecological processes. It also includes variation within individual ecosystems.
But what's loss of biodiversity?
It's really simple.
The world has begun to lose species and habitats at an ever-increasing and alarming rate.
Why?
All because of us.
